1897-1906

The Birth of a University

The Genesis of Modern Higher Education

1987: The Founding Vision : The story began in Pyongyang with the
establishment of Soongsil Academy by Dr. William M. Baird.
Its creation marked a critical turning point, laying the very
groundwork for modern educational principles in Korea.

1906: Official Recognition as Korea's First University : Soongsil was
officially accredited as a university. This milestone established
it as the first higher education institution in the history of the
Korean Peninsula, setting the standard for academic excellence
and innovation that followed.

1938

Upholding Integrity

1938: A Defining Moment : In 1938, faced with the imposition of mandatory Shinto
shrine worship by the Japanese colonial government, Soongsil University
made an unparalleled historical decision. Upholding the supreme values of
conscience and freedom of religion, the university voluntarily chose closure
rather than submission, thereby safeguarding the integrity of education and
the spirit of the Korean people.

1954 ~ Present

Leading the Future

1954 ~ Present: Resurrection and IT Leadership : After its post-war reconstruction
in Seoul (1954), Soongsil continued its legacy of pioneering.
In the 1970s, it founded the nation's first Department of Electronic
Computing, decisively shaping South Korea's rise as a global IT leader.

Today, Soongsil University continues to lead—building upon the firm foundation of Korea's First University—to shape the
future in the domains of AI convergence and advanced technology, guided by our motto:

"Beyond the First, Toward the Highest."
