Detailed guideline for KOSMIC Fellow

 

International students staying in Korea are subject to a mandatory subscription to National health insurance from March 1, 2021.

[Summation]

 

A. You will be insured to the National Health Insurance(NHI) from March 1st, 2021.
– If you visit the hospital from March 1st, you will be automatically covered by the NHI even if you do not have an insurance card.

B. Monthly contribution is 39,540 KRW until February 2022 (70% reduction)

C. Your March contribution also is 39,540 KRW but is payable in 10 installments.
– 3,950 KRW x 10 months

D. NHI will send your health insurance card and April insurance bill around March 10th.

E. The contribution included in the April insurance bill will be 43,490 KRW.
– 39,540 KRW for April contribution + 3,950 KRW for 1/10th of the March contribution.

F. You are required to pay for the insurance bill by March 25th at a bank.

G. You are strongly advised to visit the on-campus Woori Bank upon receipt of your monthly insurance bill in order to prevent nonpayment or apply for an automatic transfer by calling 1577-1000(and press 7 for foreign language service) *Please proceed with the latter procedure after issuing ARC and creating your own account.

1. Contributions

 

Monthly contributions (insurance premium) for international students for 2021: 43,920 KRW per month (a. 39,540 KORW + b. 3,950 KRW for 1/10th of the March contribution)

a. Monthly contribution for 2021: 39,540 KRW (first payment from April)
b. 1/10th of the March 2021 is 39,540 KRW, as well, but is payable in 10 installments (3,950 KRW x 10 months) to reduce the burden of students.

 

2. Due date for payment of Monthly Insurance Bills

 

The insurance bill will be provided in both Korean and English and the contribution for the following month is due by the 25th of the current month (prepayment).

Your first insurance bill will be sent to the address registered in the Immigration system by postal mail around March 10th and you are required to pay the contribution by March 25th. (Contribution for April: 43,490 KRW)

* Although you will pay for your first contribution by March 25th, you will be insured to the National Health Insurance from March 1st. Please present your Alien Registration Card should you visit the hospital from March 1st.

 

3. Payment Method

 

Bank, automatic transfer (from your bank), website, NHIS branch office  * If you want to apply for the electronic billing service or automatic transfer, please call 1577-1000 (press 7 for foreign language service) or visit the on-campus Woori Bank upon receipt of your monthly insurance bill.

 

4. Reimbursement for KOICA Fellow

 

You MUST pay for your insurance fee by yourself until further notice. The whole amount that you pay for your NHI will be reimbursed to you later on. We will notify you of further updates regarding reimbursement procedures. In the meantime, please make sure to make a payment by the 25th of every month based on the bill which will be sent to your dormitory address.

 

5. Insurance Benefits
A person who receives medical care benefits bears part of the medical expenses

a. Outpatient medical services: 30%~60% of the National Health Insurance, covering expenses (varies by medical care institution type and area)
b. Hospitalization expenses: 20%


5. Disadvantages with Nonpayment of Contributions

a. Health insurance benefits at medical care institutions are unavailable from the first day of the month following the payment deadline until the contribution is fully paid.
b. Your stay in Korea may not be extended by the Korea Immigration Service.
c. The National Health Insurance System may demand payment by the specified period. Where a person fails to pay the insurance contributions by the specified period, compulsory collection procedures to seize his/her estate, automobile, deposit, and so on may proceed.

 

6. Immediate Coverage

The insured is NOT required to claim benefits after receiving treatment. Simply present your insurance card and Alien Registration Card when you visit the hospital and the medical bill you receive after your treatment will be the final amount that you are required to pay.

 

7. Changes in Personal Information

a. Report any changes in personal information (such as the place of residence, passport number or visa type) to a local Immigration Office within 14 days of such a change.
b. After the report to the Immigration Office, contact the National Health Insurance Call Center (033-811-2000 / English service available) for further direction.

★  Please note that your ARC will be issued in April so you must pay the NHI for March individually via the on-compus Woori bank.
★  Please take the receipt vitally after the payment is done.
